Sara Blakely is the billionaire entrepreneur behind Spanx, the popular shapewear and undergarment company. Blakely was born in 1971 in Clearwater, Florida. She graduated from Florida State University and spent several years working in sales. In 1998, Blakely came up with the idea for Spanx while getting ready for a party. She cut the feet off her pantyhose to wear under white pants, creating a smoother look, and realized there was a business opportunity. With just $5,000 in savings, Blakely researched patents, manufacturers, and materials to develop a prototype for what would become Spanx footless pantyhose. She handled all the initial marketing, sales, and fulfillment herself in the early bootstrap days of the company.
Blakely relentlessly pursued major department store buyers until Spanx finally launched in Neiman Marcus and Bloomingdales in 2000. An endorsement from Oprah Winfrey that same year put Spanx on the map. Over the next decade, Blakely expanded Spanx into a robust brand offering bras, underwear, and more.
Her keen focus on creating products women love and savvy marketing fueled incredible growth. In 2012, Blakely became the youngest self-made female billionaire from the success of Spanx, which now generates over $1 billion in annual sales.
